Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a diagnostic medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce visual images, or a sonogram.

The use of ultrasonography in medicine allows your physician to see inside your body to confirm early pregnancy, assess the health of your reproductive organs, and track the growth of your baby. An ultrasound is also used in other medical disciplines besides OB/GYN to detect health conditions or to make a diagnosis.

Not sure if you’re pregnant yet? Within 2 weeks of a missed period, the power of ultrasonography can provide you with an answer. At Newton-Wellesley OB/GYN, an ultrasound is an excellent method to image your uterus, detect pregnancy, and even diagnose potential health problems in your reproductive organs.

Ultrasound FAQs

How is an ultrasound done?
For most ultrasound exams, you will lie face-up on an exam table. Ultrasound imaging uses a small probe called a transducer and gel placed directly on the skin. The transducer is placed on the body and moved back and forth over the area of interest until the desired images are captured. High-frequency sound waves travel from the probe through the gel into the body.

Early Pregnancy Ultrasounds

If you’re in the first, second, or third trimester of your pregnancy—or if you want to confirm an early pregnancy—an ultrasound is the most accurate method for detection. The scan helps you identify your specific date of conception and your eventual due date.

Second and third-trimester fetal anatomy scans help your physician determine if your baby is developing normally. You can also get a nuchal translucency ultrasound, which is performed around the 12th week of pregnancy in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. This scan helps to diagnose chromosomal conditions such as Down Syndrome.

What are the benefits of ultrasonography?

At Newton-Wellesley OB/GYN, there is an on-site ultrasound technician who is an expert in all obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound services. Your physician then has the chance to review the ultrasound images and talk with you about the results.

As a fast and accurate process, ultrasonography can provide you with the answers you need to make the best decisions about your reproductive health and to ensure a healthy and safe pregnancy.
