On-Site Surgical Center
Among the many services we provide to our
patients at Newton-Wellesley Obstetrics & Gynecology are several surgical
procedures. These are all performed on site at our Outpatient Surgical Center.
The benefits of having these procedures
performed at our Surgical Center are many. There is no requirement for IV fluids
or IV medication.
You will receive the highest quality medical
care available, by our staff of medical professionals in a patient-oriented
setting. We have been performing these procedures for many years.
You will receive continuous medical and
personal care and attention while you are at our medical suite. Your health and
well being are top priorities for our entire staff.
Your procedure can be scheduled and performed
quickly, with no extended waiting time and without the voluminous paperwork
typically required at a hospital.
Having your procedure done at our Surgical
Center is often a more convenient and more private experience, as opposed to
going to a hospital.
We have extensive experience with pain
management and have developed a protocol with oral medication that minimizes
discomfort. You will remain comfortable throughout the few minutes required for
A hysteroscopy is a procedure used to diagnose
or treat problems of the uterus. During this procedure, your doctor inserts a
thin, telescope-like instrument (hysteroscope) into the vagina in order to
examine your cervix and your uterus. A light is shone through this instrument,
allowing your doctor to see your uterus during the procedure.
Your doctor may recommend a hysteroscopy to
diagnose abnormal bleeding. It may also be performed to treat other uterine
conditions, such as fibroids and polyps, septums, and uterine adhesions. Should
your doctor discover fibroids or polyps during the procedure, an instrument
passed through the hysteroscope can be used to remove them. Alternatively,
tissue samples can be taken for biopsy.
Sometimes a hysteroscopy is performed for other
situations, such as diagnosing the cause of repeated miscarriages, performing
sterilization, or locating an intrauterine device (IUD).
You may receive local anesthesia prior to your
hysteroscopy. It is a short procedure, and typically patients can return home
shortly after itís done.
Women who suffer from an abnormally heavy and
prolonged menstrual period (a condition known as menorrhagia) may have these
symptoms eliminated by endometrial ablation.
This is a minimally invasive procedure that
cauterizes a thin layer of a womanís uterus?lining, which stops the menstrual
flow in many women. For other women, it reduces the menstrual flow to normal or
even lighter levels.
No incisions are required for this procedure.
Typically, instruments are inserted through the cervix into the uterus. The
endometrium (inner mucous membrane of the uterus) is cauterized through heated
This procedure is a less-invasive alternative
to a hysterectomy and typically takes only a few minutes. The uterus is not
removed, and the ovaries are not affected. Recovery is swift, with minimal
The Essure procedure is a type of permanent
sterilization for women. It involves the insertion of two micro inserts into the
fallopian tubes, during which there is minimal cramping. These micro inserts
cause permanent blockage of the fallopian tubes and therefore prevents sperm
from reaching the egg.
This procedure is done for one of several
reasons. It is permanent and extremely effective. There is no incision required,
and there is no effect on your menstrual cycle. As with all of our Surgical
Center procedures, it is private and convenient.
The Essure procedure takes about 15 minutes or
less. Women who have this procedure may experience some mild abdominal pain or
bleeding. They will follow up with their physician after a few months to have an
X-ray to confirm that the Essure inserts are in correct placement and that the
fallopian tubes are blocked. During these months immediately following the
procedure and before your follow-up, you must use another form of contraception.
This procedure is irreversible.
Dilation and Curettage (D&C)
A dilation and curettage, also known as a D&C,
is a surgical procedure commonly used to treat abnormal or excessive uterine
bleeding. It involves the dilation (expansion) of your cervix and tissue removal
from inside of the uterus (curettage).
It is also used to detect cancer or as part of
infertility investigation (an inability to become pregnant). In some cases, a
D&C is performed following a miscarriage.
The D&C procedure involves the dilation of your
cervix by the insertion of a series of thin rods. This process will gradually
enlarge the opening of your cervix painlessly. Next, a curette, which is a
spoon-shaped instrument, is inserted through the cervix into your uterus to
scrape away the tissue. This tissue is then sent to our laboratory for
